The My Safe Florida Home Program now has a new and easy online option to help contractors obtain the necessary training at no charge. To take advantage of this new option, contractors can click on the following link: www.estimating.org/mysafefloridahome/.

We look forward to working with you.

INFORMATION REGARDING INSPECTION REPORTS AND GRANTS

The My Safe Florida Home program has received many questions from contractors regarding the information provided in the wind inspection reports provided to homeowners and grant eligibility requirements.

Wind inspection reports continue to provide homeowners with valuable information regarding all seven original improvements:

  • improving the strength of the roof deck attachment,
  • creating a secondary water barrier to prevent water inclusion,
  • improving the survivability of your roof covering,
  • reinforcing roof-to-wall connections,
  • bracing gable ends in roof framing,
  • upgrading exterior wall-opening protections, and
  • upgrading exterior doors.

Homeowners are not required to complete work in all areas recommended in order to receive a grant through the My Safe Florida Home program. Under the new law, grant funds can ONLY be used for opening protections, which includes windows, skylights, exterior doors and garage doors, as well as the bracing of gable ends. Homeowners are still required to use a participating contractor from our list to be eligible to receive a matching grant.

Eligible homeowners who choose to protect their windows must protect all windows identified in their wind inspection report as needing hurricane protection in order to get reimbursed. Similarly, if they choose to protect doors, all exterior doors identified by their wind inspection report as needing hurricane protection must be protected. If they choose to protect their garage door as recommended in their wind inspection report, they will be eligible for grant funds to make this improvement.

Homeowners are allowed to submit multiple reimbursement requests for work completed but never twice for the same improvement item. The My Safe Florida Home program will reimburse up to and no more than $5,000 of actual costs for any and all improvements.

PUBLIC RECORDS REQUESTS

Many homeowners have contacted the My Safe Florida Home program regarding unwanted solicitations, especially email from participating contractors. All information related to applicants and participants in the My Safe Florida Home program is considered public information under Florida law and we will continue to fulfill records requests. However, we would like to caution all contractors that unwanted solicitations may not be well received by homeowners.
