WHAT’S NEW!

Learn more about mitigation discounts.
If your home has undergone a wind inspection through the My Safe Florida Home program and you are potentially eligible for insurance discounts or credits, you will receive a mitigation form. This personalized form will tell your insurance company how your home may qualify for insurance discounts. Please read more.

Update as of November 1, 2007

One of the benefits of receiving a free wind inspection through the My Safe Florida Home program is identifying the potential insurance savings available to you based on the current structure of your home. Many insurance companies provide discounts or credits for construction features proven to reduce damage from hurricanes.

Beginning November 1, 2007, the wind inspection firms will provide a completed Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802) to homeowners who receive a free wind inspection through the our program. The form will be signed by the inspector who conducted the inspection. Homeowners are to forward these forms to their insurance carriers.

We encourage you to contact your insurance agent or company to find out what level of discount is available for certain construction features, such as:

  • Hurricane protection on all of your windows and exterior doors, such as shutters or impact resistance windows and garage doors

  • A hip roof (sloped on all sides like a pyramid)

  • Roof to wall connections that are installed with hurricane clips/straps. Discounts will vary depending on the type of connection such as toe nail, clips, single wraps or double wraps.

  • Florida Building Code-approved roof covering. Discounts will vary depending on the type of covering such as asphalt, tile or metal

For Homeowners who were inspected before November 1, 2007

The Department of Financial Services was authorized to certify and provide a Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (Form # 1804) to homeowners inspected prior to November 1, 2007, under an emergency rule issued by the Office of Insurance Regulation. This rule has expired and insurance companies are no longer required to accept the forms completed by the Department.

If the Department did not mail you a form 1804, please contact our helpline at 1-866-513-6734. The inspection firm who did your inspection may be able to complete a form 1802 for you and we will request they do so.

If you have any questions or experience problems in accessing potential discounts or credits, please contact the Department of Financial Services' helpline at 1-877-MYFLCFO.
